X1/9 Insurance

Sir,

Have insurance companies gone completely insane?

I have been driving Morgans for the last eight years, the most recent being a Plus 8. This is rated as a Group 7 car (justifiably so) and I willingly pay £ 101 per annum for comprehensive cover (wife and self only driving).

For reasons of practicality I have decided to purchase a Fiat X1/9 – a somewhat less potent machine than the Plus 8, and a very safe car according to Motor Sport – and yet find it is rated as Group 7 as well. Indeed, two companies contacted specified that drivers must be over 30 and have full 60% NCB, a third company specified a compulsory £50 excess. I do not understand their logic!

Have other prospective purchasers found the same incomprehensible situation?

I.utterworth, V. J. M. Harris.

PS – It is on Motor Sport’s recommendation that I have decided to buy an X1/9.
