Secret Stirling Moss interview surfaces

Stirling Moss declared himself satisfied with life in a final in-depth interview, recorded shortly before his retirement from the public sphere.

Unseen until now, the conversation with Mia Forbes Pirie, the daughter of his former secretary, and family friend, is a revealing account of the man behind Mr Motor Racing.

In the hour-long recording, presented exclusively by Motor Sport, Moss recounts his famous Mille Miglia victory and says that he had more respect for Juan Manuel Fangio than any other driver. He laments his decision to retire from racing following his crash at Goodwood, saying that he should have left it an additional year, as he might have been able to return to his sublime level.

Moss also gives some insight into his ruthless and single-minded character, and how he paired his principles with the highest form of sportsmanship and fair play.

Surveying his life and career, Moss said: “Life is to be lived. Running as close to the limit as possible is exhilarating.” He said that he was proud to have been knighted and to have served his country. “I’m glad I beat Jackie Stewart to it,” he added.
