It was a photo finish in the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 after a one-lap shootout at the close. Mick Schumacher’s car had scraped the outside wall, depositing debris, leading to a seventh and final caution while the track was cleared. Meyer Shank Racing’s Swede Felix Rosenqvist took victory in the race for the first time, just 0.0233sec ahead of Team Penske’s David Malukas, making this the closest ever finish in the history of the Indy 500. The previous closest was in 1992 when Al Unser Jr beat Scott Goodyear by 0.043sec. Every second counts – Rosenqvist’s team earned £3.2m for the victory. Schumacher, making his first appearance in the 500, was named Rookie of the Year. “How about those Swedish meatballs!” 2008 winner Scott Dixon said of the winner’s performance after the race. To further highlight how close the end was, a mere 0.0155sec separated Scott McLaughlin in third, Pato O’Ward in fourth and Marcus Armstrong in fifth.
