FIRE REGULATIONS FOR CAR OWNERS

THE PETROLEUM SPIRIT REGULATIONS STATUTORY RULES and ORDERS No. 952

YOUR CAR TANK IS A “STORAGE PLACE.” HOW ORDER OPERATES.

A private garage is a” storage place ” under the above Regulations. Even when the only petrol ” stored ” is that in the car tank or the spare can on the car, the garage is still a storage place when the car is in it.

Fire Protection Nect ssary.

Regulation 50 provides that “in the storage place or as near thereto as is reasonably practical there shall be kept fire extinguishing apparatus of a type capable of extinguishing fires occasioned by petroleum-spirit or a supply of sand or other effective means of extinguishing such fires.”

Penalty for Contravention.

The Regulations which have now come into effect are made under Section 10 of the Petroleum (Consolidation) Act, 1928, under which it is laid down that “if arty person contravenes or attempts to contravene any Regulation made under this Section he shall be liable on a summary conviction to a fine not exceeding f,20 for every day on which the offence occurs or continues.”

Ilow to Comply.

When no petrol is stored apart from that in or on the car the Home Office requirements are met most conveniently and usefully by carrying ” Pyren.e ” Fire Extinguisher on the car itself as at all material times the garage is thus protected. If additional cans of petrol are stored in a private garage the ” Phomene ” Foam Type Fire Extinguisher is recommended for the garage. Sand is unreliable, difficult to apply and damaging in its effect, particularly where the car is concerned.”

Reasons for Regulations.

The Regulations have been laid down to meet the growing public fire danger incurred by the modern practice of building private garages, etc., near to or as a part of dwelling houses and business premises.

Your Garage must now be protected

THE easiest and most serviceable means of meeting these Regulations, if you do not store petrol apart from that on. your car, is to fit a ” Pyrene “Fire Extinguisher to the car. You will then have the advantage of this protection for a fire emergency on the road as well as at your garage.

The alarming increase in motor car fires has already impressed thousands of motorists with the necessity or providing such protection. The ” Pyretic ” Pile Extinguisher is always ready for instant use. It operates at any angle and with any side up. Its continuous jet commences with the first upstroke of the doubleacting pump and it does not have to depend upon any air or gas pressure. No more liquid than is necessary to put out the fire need be used and the remainder is effective for future application. The Extinguisher is easily filled up by pouring in more Pyrene ” fire extinguishing liquid.

If you keep additional cans of petrol in your garage, instal the ” Phomene ” Foam Type Extinguisher, as advised in the preceding column, but do not neglect to protect your car with the ” Pyrene” Extinguisher.
