1984 San Marino Grand Prix in pictures

Alain Prost (above, drove a commanding race at Imola to score his second victory in a 1984 World Championship qualifying round, his McLaren MP4/2 never being headed from the start despite a routine pit stop for tyres as well as a quick spin.

Renault customers Lotus and Ligier showed promising form with their V6-engined cars at Imola. Above, Andrea de Cesaris Ligier JS23 leads Elio de Angelis’ Lotus 95T in a battle for third place which was resolved in de Angelis’ favour after his rival ran out of fuel a lap before the did! Below, Britain’s Derek Warwick briefly got his Renault RE50 up to second place, but fuel consumption and gearbox problems caused him to fade to fourth at the chequered flag.

The Ferrari C4s of Arnoux and Alboreto (left) ran in tight formation for many laps, but only Arnoux survived, finishing second. Above, Niki Lauda’s McLaren MP4/2 is well down in the pack on the opening lap after being delayed behind Rosberg’s stalled Williams on the line.

Chaos (above) on the first corner at Tosa with Tambay’s Renault RE50 (right) skating to a halt with broken suspension after colliding with Eddie Cheever’s Alfa Romeo. After making a stop to replace a punctured tyre, Cheever (seen, below, leading Bellof’s Tyrrell) staged a grand recovery but also ran short of fuel with two laps to go, being classified eighth.
