The helmet worn by Niki Lauda during his near-fatal crash at the Nürburgring in 1976, is to be offered for sale by Bonhams at an estimate of £40,000-£50,000.

The auction, on May 4 in Miami, will see a portion of proceeds donated to UNICEF, as chosen by the Lauda family.

Despite the three-time world champion’s attempt to organise a drivers’ boycott, the 1976 German Grand Prix proceeded amid concerns over poor weather and track safety standards.

Through the Bergwerk corner on the second lap of the race, Lauda lost control of his Ferrari, spinning off the track, hitting the barrier and becoming engulfed in flames. His helmet flew off in the impact, but Lauda was pulled from the burning wreckage alive.

The extensively damaged red helmet has been held privately since 1976. This auction marks the first time it has been available to the public for purchase.

“We are privileged to present this historically significant helmet, as a testament to Niki Lauda’s legacy as a driver and as a champion for driver safety,” said James Garguilo, Bonhams car automobilia specialist.
