During February we had an opportunity to view the first of the new production T.B.S. 500-c.c. cars in action at Brands Hatch. While embodying many principles tried and proved by Alf Bottoms last year in his successful J.B.S., the new car bears little comparison with the 1950 version. As one of the assembled company put it, “the old one was evolved, this new one was designed,” and that is very true, for the whole car has been built with a degree of precision that is very rare among 500 builders.
Weather conditions were very bad so that no high speeds could be indulged in, but all who tried the car were impressed with the controllability on the slippery track. It was driven round by various well-known drivers consistently for three hours and as Alf said “nothing has fallen off, and the only thing to come loose is the gear-lever knob, so I’m satisfied,” and well he might be. If the projected dozen cars are completed in time we should see Cooper supremacy seriously contested during the coming season.
