VW versus Fiat

In saying last month that Fiat’s 1968 vehicle production gave them the lead in Europe, we have incurred the wrath of several correspondents, who say that, in fact, Volkswagen, with 1,548,933 units, of which 1,055,529 were apparently Beetles, led Fiat, who claim 1,450,000 units. VW’s total sales are given as 1,775,000 units, if production from Brazil and Mexico is included.

We have been trying to obtain figures for World car production, putting Fiat and VW in correct perspective and finding out how Japan fits in. Meanwhile, if our readers are wrong about VW production in 1968 we are sure Fiat’s publicity people will soon put them right.
