Autocross '60s Style

PP Video, £10.99.

Autocross used to be big business. Remember the Player’s No6 Championship, John Bevan’s Naveb and all that? Nowadays, the money and the glamour are in rallycross; autocross remains a popular weekend hobby for those of an impecunious nature.

As with all of PP’s retro videos, the production appears amateurish by modern standards, but that shouldn’t be taken as a criticism; TV coverage of F1 was ropey in the extreme in those days.

This particular tape was culled from the archives of David Ross, the man responsible for the excellent Motor Racing ’60s Style trilogy that appeared a few years ago. The contents are a touch repetitive; the sight of Hillman Imps gyrating in a muddy field does not have long-term visual appeal.

Its quirkiness, however, is part of its charm. ‘Twas an age of muddy innocence, and its transformation into a modern VHS format is welcome. SA
