Invicta

I read something interesting about the 1.5-litre Invicta. What was not mentioned was that, after S C H Davis, The Autocar’s sports editor, had crashed a 4.5-litre low-chassis while leading a wet Mountain Handicap at Brooklands, Invicta gave him just such a 1.5-litre saloon. The bigger car was said to slide easily, in spite of a low CoG, and the experienced Davis could hardly be blamed for the accident at the difficult banking corner which put him into hospital for a long time. I suppose we shall never know whether Invicta’s gift was made in sympathy, or in the hope that Sammy would not call the big Invicta dangerous, or even in the quest for publicity when this very famous driver got back to some motoring?
