The Collector
One of a kind

I’d like to take a break from the usual collectibles chat to take a moment to remember a true one of a kind, the immensely talented artist Michael Turner, who died in December at the age of 91.

Michael was a real trailblazer in the world of art for two reasons, firstly his motor sport imagery, which so many will have seen and appreciated across its various forms, but also his wonderful work in aviation.

Michael rose to prominence in the 1950s and ’60s, particularly through commissions from the Automobile Club de Monaco to create posters to advertise the upcoming GP. These are wonderful works that captured the era and the event perfectly, and always featured the winning car from the previous year as a quirk. Replicas are readily available and are lovely things. Not many original posters were printed and survivors are rare – often distinguished by a pink stripe on the back.

John Surtees told me a wonderful story about Bruce McLaren, who asked Michael to design a logo for the McLaren racing team, and he came up with the eponymous badge featuring the kiwi bird of New Zealand. Bruce was so impressed he asked Michael to turn his pencil to sketch the firm’s early Can-Am cars, starting with the mighty McLaren M1. Now there’s some versatility!

I had the pleasure of meeting Michael at his home. John commissioned him to create six paintings of iconic moments from his career, inset, and I was invited to see the drafts and arrange the limited run of prints. Michael was a warm and friendly man, softly spoken and studious… and amazingly talented. He worked from a beautiful studio in his garden allowing his cats to wander through the windows to sit and watch him paint.

If you’re in the market for some motor sport-themed fine art, now is the time to snap up some of Michael’s as a fantastic way to remember one of the true greats.
