A new Fiat has just been introduced into the already very comprehensive Fiat range. The 850 falls in size between the 1100 and the very popular 600, and includes several interesting features. The 4-speed gearbox has Porsche-type synchromesh and is a treat to use. The 850 is fully independently sprung and uses anti-roll bars at front and back. The cooling system is sealed with an expansion tank made of translucent plastic for quick checking, and contains anti-freeze protection down to —35°C. This new car handles well, with predictable oversteer and maximum speeds of 75 m.p.h. are obtained from both ordinary and (plus 3 m.p.h.) Super models. From a driver’s point of view this car has been designed for Europeans and not African pygmies. We look forward to a full test later in the year.
