A Le Mans Chenard-Waleker

Sir,

The Le Mans Chenards were briefly mentioned in your February “Vintage Postbag”. A rather unlikely former owner of one of these was, apparently, the gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. In the book “Django Reinhardt” by Charles Delaunay (Cassell 1961), page 61, is the following paragraph: “During the winter of 1933-4, we took Django off on tour with us”, Ekyan goes on “Jean Sablon was appearing in the chief towns, on the Cote d’Azur and in the hotel Moises had opened at Le Mont-Genevre. In the course of the tour Django bought a Chenard racing model, an amazing machine that had been driven in the Le Mans twenty-four-hour event”.
