Trouble-free vehicles

Sir,

I have read with interest in Motor Sport for April 1978 Dr. Elliott-Pyle’s letter praising his pair of Reliant Kittens. It is refreshing these days to read that a motorist is truly satisfied with his or her particular choice of car, especially when it is of modest size and price.

My wife and I each run a VW 1200 Beetle and we have owned several of these over the past 15 years. We find them consistently reliable and economical, otherwise we could not afford to run two cars.

Apart from the maker’s recommended servicing the only additional items necessary have been tyres which seem to last indefinitely relining of brakes and new exhaust systems a new exhaust fitted last week by the local VW agents cost £38 for parts and labour.

Full comprehensive cover is reasonable at £91 per year for both cars, and actual depreciation these days seems to be nil.

When one hears of some motorists’ troubles with frequent major repair bills, one feels lucky to have owned a series of trouble-free vehicles.

We also own two kittens but these are the whiskered variety!!
