International Trophy

THE start of the BRDC’s 31st International Trophy race at Silverstone saw eventual winner Eddie Cheever heading the field away in his orange Osella. Alongside him was Englishman Brian Henton in the new Ralt. Henton led briefly but Cheever’s Pirelli-shod Italian car got its toughest challenge from Derek Daly’s ICI Chevron. The Irishman only lost the lead on the last lap when the March gear linkage failed. The supporting Vandervell Formula 3 race fell to the Unipart March of Britain’s Nigel Mansell, after Andrea de Cesaris’ March was penalised for missing the chicane. Mansell’s team-mate, Brett Riley, finished second, making it a 1-2 for the Dolomite-engined Unipart team.
