THE first round of the Pace Petroleum British Hill Climb Championship at Loton Park on Easter Monday fell to Dave Harris with a time of 49.48 sec. Hero of the meeting, and showing just as much promise as did 1981 Champion, James Thomson, was young Mark Williams. Sharing the car his father used last year with Richard Fry, Mark finished in second place with 49.60 sec., becoming the fourth person to record a sub-50 second climb at this difficult venue. Marryn Griffiths, now sharing a car with Max Harvey to give himself more time for business, followed closely in third spot with 50.24 sec. and Martin Bolsover, now running in the over 1600 c.c. class since acquiring a Hart engined Pilbeam, was fourth. Chris Cramer had a very uncharacteristic “off” on his first Top Ten run, and full.ed in eighth spot and Richard Jones did well to finish ninth in his Matlock sports-racing car.
