Standard Motor Club

Formerly the Standard Register, this Club was formed in 1974 to set up and operate a central spares scheme for Standard owners, to hold events and social meetings, and to produce a regular newsletter enabling members to maintain contact. The last-named, as the Standard Car Review, appears in duplicated form every month and is packed with useful information. We note that its advertisements for used Standards appear to include some very low-priced cars (we spotted one alleged runner for £75 o.n.o., and others taxed and with M.o.T. certificates from £250 or less, which should encourage those who are hard up but attracted to the older car movement). The Club runs a Register of all kinds of Standards, kept by John Kennewell, 20 Barleycroft Lane, Dinnington. Sheffield, and has rally co-ordination, spares co-ordination and an historian, etc. Last December it enrolled 13 new members owning between them 15 Standards, of which seven were pre-war models.

The Club must be commended for listing some 345 Standards of 1935-39 alone, mostly with Reg. Nos., these including two V8 Raymond Mays models, several Railton-bodied cars, an RAF van, Avon Sports, and a Ranalagh Flying-14, etc. Among Vanguards and Ensigns the highest score is a tie between Vignale Sixes and Ensigns. The National Standard Rally is due on July 2nd / 3rd, at Castle Abbey House, Northampton. Membership Secretary: L. Fish, 1, York Gate, Southgate, London N14 6HS.

Firestone Vintage Tyres

Firestone of New Zealand, who manufacture Vintage and Classic tyres, have reintroduced yet more sizes to augment their range. The new sizes are 450-17, 500 / 525-16 in both black and white sidewall, and 750-13.

The 450-17, in the original De Luxe Champion pattern, should suit owners of Ford Populars, Anglias and Prefects from ’48 to ’59. The 500 / 525-16 is the standard size on numerous cars, including ’48 to ’54 Austin A-40’s, ’48 to ’59 Morgan 4/4’s. ’48 to ’55 Singer Roadsters, Jowett Javelins, ’48 to ’51 Vauxhalls and many more.
