Waldegård returns to Stratos

July 7, 2014

For the first time in over 30 years, former World Rally Champion Björn Waldegård returned to competition in a Lancia Stratos during the opening round of the MSA British Historic Rally Championship.

Waldegård contested the Robin Hood Forest Stages Rally in Steve Perez’s Stratos and set leading times on his way to a class victory and a top 10 finish.

“I tell people that the older you get, the more stupid you get to accept things like this, but I knew when I got the helmet on it would be fun,” he said. “It was a small, tight car even in the old days and I haven’t got smaller, but the car seems to have.”

Here is a man who goes racing every weekend from March to October. Paul’s passion for the sport goes back to when he was a child of the 1960s. He has organised, competed in and marshalled on scores of events, and has written about the subject for 20 years. He is as at home in the paddock at Brands Hatch as in a Welsh forest or at Shelsley Walsh.
