Poor entry forces GT2 cancellation

The introduction of the new FIA European GT2 Championship has been postponed for 2010.

The series, which would have run on the same bill as some GT1 World Championship events, suffered a lack of entries. There will be a one-off FIA GT2 European Cup run in July’s Spa 24 Hours, including GT3 and GT4 cars.

FIA GT boss Stephane Ratel said the problem was that GT3 cars are now as fast as GT2s, but 40 per cent cheaper. He denied his decision to enforce a pro-am format had played a role.

Ratel said he was pushing ahead with plans for a GT2 series with a “limited number of events at prestigious tracks”.
