1978 Canadian Grand Prix in pictures

Gilles Villeneuve scored a fairy-tale first Grand Prix win in front of his hime crowd in the Canadian World Championship event on the new Ile Notre Dame Circuit in Montreal. For Ferrari – he was in 312T3/034 – it meant complete domination of the North American rounds. The youthful here is seen celebrating, below right, on the winner’s rostrum between second placed Scheckter and third placed Reutemann. Reutemann’s Ferrari is shown on its way to that third place to the right above. Pictured above in the Lotus 79, Jarier rewarded Chapman’s perspicacity by heading the field for all but 20 laps, when an oil leak intruded. New boy Piquet, in the third Brabham BT46, shows promise in the photograph on the right as he leads the eventual winner during Friday practice. Top left, Jones’ Williams ran second until delayed by a pit stop. Wolf-mounted for the last time, Scheckter is seen heading for second place, left. Daly in the Ensign, below left, was another new boy to shake the Establishment: the Irishman finished sixth.
