Piquet had three tyre stops, which effectively cost him the race. He finished fourth, just ahead of Mansell.

Gerhard Berger was suffering from Montezuma’s Revenge and thought he would not be able to start. In the event, he not only started but was able to run on a single set of Pirellis to score the victory which he has been threatening to take all season. Pirelli is leaving F1 after the next race, so at least the firm goes out on a high note.
