R.A.C. Hill-climb championship

In our September issue we gave the positions in the Championship as far as Craigantlet, where Peter Westbury had once more assumed the lead with the 4-wheel-drive Ferguson-Climax. Since then the Championship series has been completed with qualifying events at Shelsley Walsh, Prescott, Harewood and Dyrham Park. Peter Boshier-Jones (1.3 Lotus 22-Climax (s)) kept the Championship very wide open by winning the Championship classes at both Shelsley Walsh and Prescott, as well as collecting a Prescott course record. Westbury, however, clinched his second successive Championship by winning and breaking the record at Harewood, despite the, so far reliable, Ferguson breaking a piston on the preceding evening. Dyrham Park, only a matter of course for Westbury, Boshier-Jones and Tony Marsh (2.0 Marsh-Climax), all secure in first, second and third places respectively, was highlighted by the battle for fourth place overall between John Macklin (3.5 Cooper-Buick) and Tony Griffiths (2.5 B.R.M.). Macklin, who gave best to Griffiths at Harewood, reversed the tables and won the day by placing fourth to Griffiths’ fifth place. The fact that both drivers finished up with 56 points in the Championship aggregate still means that Macklin, by getting the better at Dyrham, the the deciding hill, finishes in fourth place, with Griffiths fifth and Ray Fielding (2.5 Lotus 21 -Climax) sixth with 37 points. Dyrham Park did not witness any letting up by Westbury and a new record was a fitting finale to the 1964 Championship series.
