Record straight

Sir,

In 1933 I visited Brooklands and saw Whitney Straight in action on The Mountain setting a new lap record. To a boy of 13 this was pure magic and I fell hopelessly in love with this beautiful car. Now, 64 years after, it has appeared again, at Goodwood and Coys, where the owner, Dean Butler, kindly suggested that I should sit in the car for a photograph, which I now enclose. My point, however, is that this very historic car holder of the Mountain lap record and that of Mont Ventoux (and didn’t it also win at Albi in 1934?) has barely been mentioned in any of the motoring magazines and no photos of it have appeared. I do feel you should put this right. I heartily congratulate you on the new MOTOR SPORT which also became one of my loves in 1933. I am unable to see why people grumble that you do not cover modern racing you clearly cannot do everything. More power to you!

I am yours etc,

T V Brettell, Egham, Surrey
