Herbert Linge

Pioneer in pole-position

Frank Wiesner

Colin Goodwin highlighted the career of Porsche’s Herbert Linge in the August issue, but five pages were never going to be enough to cover its sheer breadth. Published in German, Frank Wiesner’s book is packed with stories from Herbert’s days as an apprentice in the 1940s through to his role in creating the Carrera Cup in 1990, taking in his role in the filming of Le Mans and the 100 races and rallies that he knitted in alongside his day job. The photos, showing everything from getting very sideways in the snow in a 911 to vultures cleaning up road kill on the Carerra Panamericana, prove that he has had the most extraordinary life, flitting from racing at Sebring, tackling the Mille Miglia to developing the Weissach test track. It’s hard not to feel jealous. BJ
