AUSTIN VICTORIOUS Al’ CRAIGANTILET

H. L. Hadley, driving the works 747 c.c. side-valve racing-Austin, twice broke the Craigantlet Hill-climb record on August 29th, the new figure being 1 min. 22+ secs. (46.86 m.p.h.) The old record was established by E. R. Hall, who climbed in 1 min. 23+ secs. last year in a blown M.G. Magnette. Hadley had little opposition, because A. Hutchison’s ” Limerick ” M.G. had a serious breakage just beyond the starting-line, Lindsay-Glegg lost most of the overworked Dorcoo gear-box half-way up, and Flt.-Lt. L. R. Briggs had to get his Mille Miglia M.G. away without the aid of the lowest ratio. Second fastest time was made by McFerran’s 2-litre

Bugatti, in 1 min. 28i secs., so Hadley had much in hand. J. M. Toulmin did some useful work with his ” Cracker ” and ” Musketeer” trials M.Gs., and R. M. Kennedy produced the ” McN-Special, based on 2-litre _A .C., and taught many people a lot about fast cornering. The. Ulster A.C. looked after the organisation with customary efficiency.
