Straight from the Mould

July 7, 2014

There is a special relevance to Motor Sport in the first of a limited line of hand-built 1/43-scale miniatures from Models of Distinction, of Ledbury, Hertfordshire. It is the Whitney Straight Maserati 8CM, the subject of DSJ’s recent book.

More usually employed in building up kits for private collectors, the man behind Models of Distinction, Steve Bates, was commissioned by 3011’s owner David Heimann to produce the white-metal model, which is only available fully-built and is limited to 120 examples.

It is modelled in its restored state, using tyres of current vintage pattern on photo-etched ADB wheels from Italy. Other etched parts include the famous shield-shaped grille and foot pedals, while the underside is fully detailed. It is priced at 129.35, plus £2 postage and packing. GC

Bravely ignoring his degree in industrial design after discovering night rallies in a Renault 8, GC joined Motor Sport by accident, in the Teesdale days around 1982 when Jenks and WB were office regulars and Mr Tee ruled with a rod of cardboard. He took part in some of the early historic rallies, winning one of the Pirelli Marathons, and regularly runs his Mk2 Jaguar in road events.
