Aintree lamented

Sir,

The cancellation of the meeting at Aintree on 20th July last was a great disappointment to me.

As a 16 year old in 1957, I travelled to Aintree with a classmate for our first visit to a Grand Prix and was overjoyed that Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks won the race in a Vanwall.

I have found the programme for that day in 1957, priced at two shillings and across the front cover I have Tony Vandervell’s autograph.

We found him in the infield beyond the pits.

Mr Vandervell was in the doorway of a small caravan and was happy to sign my programme.

Personalities and drivers were approachable then and I also acquired the autographs of Jean Behra and Jack Fairman.

Those were the days when you could mix easily with team owners and drivers.

Please continue with your/our marvellous monthly magazine which I have read since 1956.

I am yours etc
