Italian Grand Prix

Niki Lauda (above) was awarded first place in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on September 10th, although his Brabham BT46 finished third on the road. Bottom left, Patrick Tambay’s McLaren finished fifth (seventh on the road) while John Watson’s Brabham BT46 finished second (fourth on the road). Watson (below right) is seen leading Alan Jones’s Williams FW06 at the Parabotica curve.

Gilles Villeneuve’s Ferrari 312T3 leads Mario Andretti’s Lotus 79 into Parabolica on the first lap of the re-started Italian Grand Prix. The new World Champion passed Villeneuve with five of the 40 laps still to run, but they were both penalised one minute for an over-eager start, dropping them from first and second to sixth and seventh positions respectively. Below, Derek Daly’s Ensign holds off Jacques Laffite’s Ligier under braking for the Variante Ascari.
