Toyota releases concept shots of Gazoo Racing Supra
Toyota has released concept images of its Gazoo Racing Supra at Geneva on Tuesday as it gears up to release the first new Supra in 24 years. This two-door concept has a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive set-up and will also be featured in an upcoming update to Gran Turismo Sport, in April.
Though these are just rendered images, the Toyota Supra has an illustrious motor sport record with the fourth-generation model (1993) dominating the Super GT series, called the All-Japan GT racing series at the time. It took four wins in the GT500 class, was entered in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, IMSA in the 1980s and at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the ’90s. The Supra is still highly coveted by tuners and drifters.
The road-going version will feature a three-litre turbocharged straight-six engine from BMW, and the branding will be shared with Gazoo, as in these concept images. Andrew Frankel wrote, in the latest issue of Motor Sport, that “The plan seems to be to develop the Gazoo brand into a credible alternative to BMW’s M division and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG tuning house.”
Power is predicted to be around 340bhp for the three-litre road-going version, though Toyota will offer a choice of 1.8-litre and more powerful 2.0-litre full hybrid powertrains.
