Ferrari: From Race to Road

As Ferrari marks its 1000th Formula 1 Grand Prix, we celebrate its illustrious history with new articles, features, interviews and analysis that tell the story of the brand.

The Ferrari from Race to Road special collectors’ issue charts the history of one of the world’s most famous car marques with an in-depth look at the team, its mystique and the notable cars and figures that helped shape Ferrari.

Founded in 1939, and a constant on the F1 grid since the inaugural world championship season in 1950, the Ferrari legend has grown from ‘Il Drake’ Enzo Ferrari’s desire to go racing, and his creation of a road car division to fuel that ambition.

Some of the finest content published from the Motor Sport Archive has been hand-picked for this 164-page celebration of the Prancing Horse, from its early beginnings to Le Mans wins and F1 world titles, to the modern era and its current efforts in F1. It’s a thorough update of our 2017 Ferrari special issue.

There are new interviews, deep insight into the iconic machinery that helped shape the team’s future, such as the 1975 312T and 1966 Dino 206SP, and beautiful photography from each era.

Grand Prix Editor Mark Hughes sits down with the new chosen one at Ferrari, to get Charles Leclerc’s perspective on his transition from highly-rated youngster to the team’s future.

Hand-picked by the late Sergio Marchionne as the driver of the future, Leclerc arrived at a Ferrari built around Sebastian Vettel, but slowly the Monégasque driver has turned the tides and gained the trust of the team to lead it into the next generation of F1 racing.

Doug Nye looks at how Mauro Forghieri became one of the most influential figures at Ferrari having worked on the workshop floors of Maranello, building up the team’s motor sport division throughout the 1960s after gaining the blessing of the boss.

Gordon Cruickshank looks at how Enzo built his empire and oversaw the rise of the Italian manufacturer in and out of racing, building up the brand with passion, intensity and theatre that has continued on since his passing.
