The next Formula 1 sprint race takes place this weekend at the Qatar Grand Prix. It will be the sixth and final sprint of the year, after rounds in China, Miami, Belgium, America, and Brazil.
Though the shorter Saturday event has had its detractors, the format has once again shown that it can provide entertainment and uncertainty in 2025. Lewis Hamilton won the Chinese sprint and Lando Norris beat Oscar Piastri to victory in Miami after Kimi Antonelli started on pole. Circuit of the Americas brought chaos at the start when both McLarens were eliminated in a multi-car crash.
Six sprint races have been scheduled for this season — as in previous years — and there has been a familiar feel to the final half of the calendar, which replicated 2024, with the sprint at Circuit of the Americas, and then a double helping in November with Brazil and Qatar. Given the close championship battle between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the final eight points for victory could prove decisive in the title race.

Are sprint races delivering in 2025?
F1 was hoping for a greater variety of winners with sprint races this year, as it looks to expand the sprint schedule to 10 or even 12 rounds in 2027, and it could argue that the format has delivered.
Until the second-to-last sprint of 2024, Verstappen was dominant, winning the first four in a row before Norris triumphed in Brazil and then handed the Qatar race to Piastri.
So far this year, the sprints have given us more diverse results, with Lewis Hamilton taking his first-ever sprint win in China. Miami might have brought a familiar Mclaren victory, but the winner was Norris, during a spell of three consecutive wins for his team-mate Piastri. Spa then brought victory for Verstappen — a rare sight at that point of the 2025 season.
By the time that F1 raced in America, Verstappen was on a roll and victory in the sprint race was less of a surprise. What happened behind him was chaotic, however, as Nico Hülkenberg came together with Oscar Piastri in Turn 1, sending the McLaren driver sliding into his team-mate, causing race-ending damage for both cars. Hülkenberg spun into Fernando Alonso, taking the Aston Martin out of the race, while behind there were further collisions.
Piastri lost out in the following Sao Paulo sprint too, spinning into the barriers off a wet kerb, along with two other drivers in quick succession. Norris went on to win, extending his lead in the drivers’ title, which could prove to be decisive come the end of the season.
Since sprints were first introduced in 2021, Verstappen has far more sprint wins than any other driver, with his tally standing at 13. Next is Noris with three, followed by Piastri and Valtteri Bottas, who both have two.
2025 F1 sprint race format
The sprint race format was introduced with the aim of adding more excitement to a grand prix weekend and, at least in terms of anticipation building through the event, it does do that.
On a conventional GP weekend two Friday practice sessions are followed by a third preceding qualifying on Saturday – with no racing happening till Sunday.
However on a sprint weekend the competitive action revs up on a Friday afternoon with sprint qualifying after just a single practice session, giving drivers little time to prepare or get their car set up.
The sprint race then happens on Saturday prior to grand prix qualifying for the main race.
