The intermittent on-screen romance between racing and Hollywood has recently been reignited in Brad Pitt’s F1 movie.

The blockbuster film star’s activity behind the wheel culminated in a one-off test of a recent McLaren F1 car at COTA, following thousands of miles of on-track filming.

However, one Hollywood legend’s interest was permanently piqued after making his own motor sport picture, resulting in a storied racing legacy.

Like Pitt, Paul Newman undertook driver training to make the Indianapolis 500-themed film Winning, in 1969.

Newman established himself as a competent competition driver first in SCCA and then in Trans-Am in the mid-‘70s, before starting one of the most successful IndyCar teams in the championship’s history as a joint owner with businessman Carl Haas.

Newman was also no stranger to longer-form endurance racing, finishing second overall at the 1979 Le Mans and competing regularly at Daytona, becoming its oldest ever class-winner aged 70 in 1995.

Now an incredible sports car Newman competed with is available to buy and race – complete with spares.

A 1989 Spice SE89P, which the actor drove at the 1990 Watkins Glen and Road America IMSA events, is on the market for £475,000 via William I’Anson.

A thoroughbred prototype, it was the only Group C machine Newman ever competed in, but also has a compelling story all of its own.

A works car built for the ’89 IMSA season, it entered the fray when the discipline was in its pomp, taking on Porsche 962s, TWR Jaguars and Nissan ZX-Ts.

Driven by legends of the series like Wayne Taylor and Bob Earl, it was at the 1990 Grand Prix du Mardi Gras at New Orleans that the car had its day in the sun with a third place for Jeff Purner.

The SE89P represented Spice’s attempt at producing a top class IMSA prototype after several seasons of successfully supplying customer machines, the car taking WEC class wins and C2 honours at the 1992 Le Mans.

However the manufacturer and team would fold in its original form at the end of 1990 after coming into financial difficulty.

Newman’s first outing in his SE89P came at Watkins Glen with Hollywood stuntman, journalist and professional racer Michael Brockman, the pair coming home seventh.

Part of the 89P’s appeal was that, like its predecessors, it was designed to be able to use a whole host of engine units.

This chassis, 002, used Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Chevrolet V8 at various points.

Over three decades since it ran in anger, the car has now been fully restored to the same spec Newman would have used, fitted with a fresh Chevrolet V8 pumping out 700bhp.

It is now ready to race at historic endurance events.
