The grids range from 1950s road race cars through to the 1970s mighty Can Am machines, to Group C sports cars and more modern endurance racers.
Don’t miss one of the event highlights at 9.35pm (1.35pm local time), when the Unser Family Cup race for International Race of Champions (IROC) cars, gets underway. Last year saw Trans-Am star Tomy Drissi take victory in his 2006 Pontiac Firebird, beating four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti and NASCAR legends Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon. Most of those names are back for 2026, along with Danny Sullivan, Scott Pruett, Bobby Labonte and Jimmie Johnson.
There is no finer gathering of historic road and race cars than Monterey Car Week, and a few must-see events stand at the centre of this 10-day motoring celebration
Other big names include McLaren Racing head Zak Brown, switching between a an IROC Camaro, a McLaren M8D Can-Am car, Porsche 935 and a Jaguar XJR-9 Group C sports car.
Jenson Button is also competing in an Alfa Romeo GT Jr in the Bob Sharp Cup for 1967-1979 tin-tops and a Dodge Viper GTS-R in the Scott Pruett Legends of Endurance race.
In addition to the competition, this year’s event is celebrating Japan’s rich history of racing, from Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha motorcycles, ridden this weekend by the likes of Kenny Roberts and Wayne Rainey, to the Subaru Impreza WRX STI; Datsun 240Z; Honda-powered Williams FW11 F1 car; and the Le Mans-winning Toyota TS050.
The event also traces IndyCar through the ages, with ten landmark machines at Laguna Seca.
It.s a full day of high-octane entertainment — well worth powering through into the early hours for European viewers.
