Sometimes they are simply the product of two ultra-competitive peers vying to win on the track while remaining friends off it, for instance Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins or Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt. But often those rivalries run deeper and become bitter, such as when contrasting characters like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are brought together in the F1 amphitheatre.
Formula 1 has been defined by great rivalries through the decades. Nor have they always been battles of the drivers. Manufacturers have also squared off against one another: think of McLaren vs Ferrari over time, or Auto Union vs Mercedes in the 1930s.
