Oscar Piastri took a comfortable win in the Miami Grand Prix to extend his Formula 1 championship lead over Lando Norris after a dominant McLaren 1-2.
Piastri, starting from fourth, took the lead on lap 14 after overtaking Max Verstappen, the Australian never looking back in the remainder of the race.
The winner of the previous two races, Piastri took the chequered flag some four seconds ahead of Norris, who lost time after he went off track at the start when fighting Verstappen for the lead.
Despite starting from pole position, the Red Bull driver finished a very distant fourth as his car was no match to the McLarens. Mercedes‘ George Russell completed the podium after passing Verstappen in the pits.
Alexander Albon completed the top five in the Williams after another superb performance.
Sprint pole winner Kimi Antonelli finished in sixth ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who endured a day to forget and were very far from the frontrunning teams.
Carlos Sainz in the second Williams and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda completed the top 10.
Story of the race
Norris appeared to make a better start than Verstappen, but the Red Bull driver shut the door into Turn 1, going slightly wide in the process.
Norris then arrived side-by-side at Turn 2, but Verstappen again defended his lead and the McLaren driver ended up going off track, losing four positions as he cut through the corner.
The Briton complained on the radio, saying, “He forced me off the road. What am I going to do? Just drive into the wall or something?”.
The incident was noted, but not investigated.
A virtual safety car followed as Alpine’s Jack Doohan hit the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson on the opening lap, sending the Kiwi into a spin and leaving debris on track. Doohan retired as a result of the damage to his car.
Piastri quickly moved into second place by passing Antonelli after the VSC ended, as Norris overtook Sainz to climb up to fifth and later Russell to take fourth.
Norris took third from Antonelli on lap 9 as Piastri began to put pressure on Verstappen in front. A fierce battle followed between the Dutchman and the Aussie, which helped Norris closed in rather quickly as the threat of rain increased.
On lap 14, Piastri overtook Verstappen to take the lead as the Red Bull driver went wide defending from the McLaren at Turn 1. Verstappen called his brakes “useless” on the radio after the move that put him under pressure from the Norris just seconds later.
As the duo battled for several laps, Piastri opened a gap of over seven seconds before Norris finally passed Verstappen at Turn 2. As he appeared to force the Dutchman off the road, Norris gave the position back before retaking second with a clean move at the same place on the following lap.
The gap between Piastri and Norris when the Briton moved into second on lap 18 was 8.6sec.
Verstappen, who had no response to the pace of the McLarens, was the first of the top three to pit on lap 27, switching from mediums to hard tyres while running some nine seconds behind Norris.
Another virtual safety car was deployed on lap 29 when Ollie Bearman retired with an apparent engine problem. Both McLarens took the opportunity to pit on the same lap and resume in first and second ahead of Russell, who made his stop and emerged ahead of Verstappen.
A third virtual safety car appeared on lap 34 as Gabriel Bortoleto retired his Sauber, an opportunity Verstappen used to ask his team to check if Russell had slowed down enough under yellow flags.
Norris gradually closed the gap on Piastri as the laps went on, but the Australian appeared to have it all under control and took his fourth win of the season, extending his championship lead in the process.
