VSCC Pomeroy Trophy

The Pomeroy Trophy Contest is a long-established event, originated by the late Laurence Pomeroy, Technical Editor of The Motor, with a series of complicated tests to find the best all-round touring car – I think he had his 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall in mind. These days the rules are not quite so all-embracing but do include acceleration, timed speed, fairly enduring laps of Silverstone and other factors. On February 23 macho men in three pre-1915 cars took on the girlies in their better-braked more modern automobiles, down to a 1998 Marcos. Out of this excellent field the Trophy was won by R Wills’ 1938 FN-BMW, the opposite class by J Baxter’s 1928 Frazer Nash – draw your own conclusions. The cars qualifying for First Class Awards were a 1973 Westfield, 1956 Triumph, and a 1931 Frazer Nash. The Edwardian award went to Barnett’s doubtless comparatively brakeless 7.1-litre Knox.
