Letters:

Sir,

You will be interested to know that the memorial to Marcel Renault remarked upon by Owen John in 1929 is still in situ and in fairly good order, although a bronze palm leaf has disappeared from it during the last two years.

According to Saint Loup, in his biography of Louis Renault, the monument was covered by a gravel heap in 1955 following re-alignment of the road. The original road now forms part of a long lay-by and the memorial is signposted. It may be found just north of Couhe, on the right hand side as you travel south from Poitiers on N10.

The wording is as follows: “A la mernoire de Marcel Renault mon accidentalto, le 29(?) mai 1903. Course automobile PARIS MADRID.”
