F1 Antics

Sir,

One has to laugh at the antics of today’s Formula One team owners. Damon Hill becomes Champion and out of the team he goes! Not the first time its happened at Williams, and for sure not the last. Unthinkable treatment for pre-war aces — can you imagine Mercedes-Benz treating Caracciola in this way, or AutoUnion booting out Rosemeyer? Cohn Chapman saying goodbye to Clark?

In those days owners looked after their drivers and acknowledged the efforts the drivers made. This made for loyalty on both sides, for the good of the sport. No doubt if Villeneuve wins next year he will be out!

Switching to Neill Monaghan’s letter (October) praising Jacky Ickx, there is one driver head and shoulders above all the rest, even Fangio, as ‘the world’s best-ever all-round racing driver’. Who? Stirling Moss, of course — the best driver never to have won the championship. But the best all round driver the world has ever seen.

Imagine how he and Rob Walker would be on top today. Good clean sportmanship, way ahead of the rest.
