From Senna caps to a Mansell FW14B, gifts for the motor sport enthusiast
From Scalextric replicas of Ronnie Peterson’s Lotus grand prix cars to signed memorabilia, specialist books and racing-inspired accessories, this Christmas selection spans the collecting habits of motor sport enthusiasts, with options ranging from modest stocking fillers to substantial purchases
Scalextric Sets
Ever wanted to pit two of the most-loved Formula 1 Lotus models against each other? Well now you can thanks to Scalextric’s latest Legends offering. This twin pack, above, celebrates Superswede Ronnie Peterson, who scored nine wins with Lotus from 1973-78. His fifth victory came at Monaco in 1974 aboard the 72, which forms one half of this pair. The second is the 79 Peterson used to take his final victory in Austria in 1978.

So, which was faster in reality? Despite both featuring the legendary 3-litre Cosworth DFV V8, the ground-effect 79 proved over 2sec quicker at tracks like Buenos Aires and Jarama. However, the difference maker this Christmas will be the judgment of your trigger finger when you actually race them.

The Ford Transit Supervan, below left, is a quirky option. Created to promote a Transit facelift, it had a spaceframe chassis and a 5-litre V8. There’s also a twin set comprising a rally Escort Mk1 and Transit, below centre. Then there’s Matt Neal’s 1999 Nissan Primera BTCC car, below right. He was the first independent driver to win a race outright, earning him £250,000.

Amalgam Ferrari Models
Since its foundation in Bristol back in 1985, Amalgam has set out to change the game in fine model making. Forget your mid-range off-the-shelf stuff, this is an entirely different league as Amalgam adapted its business from creating detailed architectural models to automotive ones in 1995. Notable for its strong relationships with manufacturers, Amalgam’s pieces are hand-built and either created from manufacturer-spec CAD design files or precision laser scanned in the case of the classics, so not a single detail is missed or out of place or scale.
Ferrari is one of the most prominent brands to partner with Amalgam, and the range is stunning. From 1:18 up to huge 1:5 scale, you can take your choice from jaw-droppingly precise Formula 1 models of both modern day, below, and yesteryear, top-notch GT racers such as the 250 GTO or 296 Challenge, above, and a wealth of road cars that look just as good as their full-size siblings in a showroom.

Of particular interest are the range of steering wheel models, inset. Not only do these save space over larger showpieces, but they perfectly encapsulate the complexity of a modern racing wheel. It even feels like the real thing. Ferrari was so impressed, it gifts them to its most treasured clientele, with some even on display at the Maranello HQ.
