The picture on page 1458, December Motor Sport depicts J. Shewell-Cooper at the top of Simms Hill in the 1935 London-Exeter event. I have turned up a programme of that date and his number is 88; incidentally, I was competing in an MG J2 in that event, number 243. Car No. 87 in the photo belongs to A. C. Cookson, a great supporter and Founder Member, I think, of the MGCC.
Some tractor, either steam, or later on diesel or petrol, was usually in attendance at Simms Hill; I admit to benefiting from its power more than once! What good days they were for the modest motorist; I enjoyed competing regularly in MCC events, and others, from 1928 to 1939 inclusive and have been one of your regular readers sinc.e 1925. I even have an odd copy of the Brooklands Gazette.
