A dangerous Road Traffic Bill

Sir,

Nobody seems to be standing up to the proposed Road Traffic Bill whereby three speeding convictions, however trivial, in three years, leads to disqualification.

This is not the only harsh feature of the Bill. The A.A. and R.A.C. seem to have lost interest and the motorist now has nobody to protect his interests.

May I appeal to Motor Sport to campaign against this persecution of the motorist by Mr. Marples, who is a greater menace than the occasional “unreasonable” policeman who you uncover.

One-year road tests, 50 m.p.h. speed limits on roads which can permit speeds much greater and on roads where the traffic stream sits in the middle of the road at 40 m.p.h. anyway, an underpass which increases traffic congestion, and parking meters in residential areas where off-street parking facilities arc inadequate. These are just a handful of the Minister’s tricks. I am a Tory, but unless Marples changes his tune or the Government kick him out of the Ministry, I shall vote Liberal at the next election, and I’m sure that many other motorists will do likewise.

Now that Motor Sport has removed any doubts as to the virtues of the VW, may we now have a campaign to reveal the follies of the “publicity man” in the Ministry of Transport.

London, W.C.1. IRVING STONE.
