Eventual race winner Gerhard Berger is paying full attention, third row, far left, while Lotus’s Ayrton Senna, cross-legged, qualified eighth but would rise to second. Nigel Mansell crashed in practice and wouldn’t start the race, which handed the F1 title to Nelson Piquet
