It’s the British Grand Prix again and the question is who is going to win, which of the dark horses are likely to edge into the top six, and will Brabham-Yamaha and Footwork-Porsche still be doomed to pre-qualifying?

Last year Alain Prost won his fourth Grand Prix of the season, and his third consecutive victory, at Silverstone while Ayrton Senna had to be content with third place. Runner-up spot went to Thierry Boutsen in the Williams-Renault, but it will take a miracle to see him achieve that place again this year since he has joined the uncompetitive Ligier team this year. This year, of course, the form book would give Ayrton Senna shortest odds having already won the first four Grands Prix of the season, but the Ferraris and Williams-Renaults can never be discounted, particularly the latter after their showing in Canada. Can the Benettons sneak up the field again and can Tyrrell clinch a victory at last having been out of the winner’s circle for so long. Neither team, though, will have been helped in their quest after each losing their chief technical men at a crucial stage.

Of the two favourites, Prost’s race/win ratio remains unaltered from last year at 25.4%, but he has now been overtaken by Senna who has improved his ratio from 22.4% to 26.0%.

Senna, Prost, Mansell, McLaren, Ferrari, Williams whatever the combination, it looks set to be a first class race again. (Please note that the statistics are up to and include the 1991 Canadian Grand Prix.) — WPK
