Tyrrell remains unbeated at Monza

The six-wheeled Tyrrell Steamroller continued at Monza’s on May 14, where Martin Stretton’s victory completed a hat-trick for the ex-Ronnie Peterson P34-6 in the FIA Thoroughbred Grand Prix Car championship.

Having won last year’s Kyalami finale, and April’s series-opener at Brands Hatch, Stretton did not anticipate such an easy time in Italy. Thus it proved in qualifying, where, armed with the exJones/Reutemann/Rosberg Williams FWO7C-15, Duncan Dayton claimed pole. Alas, the showdown lasted only until the first chicane where the pair arrived side-by-side at the head of the 25car pack. Neither would concede and, following a brush of tyres, Dayton’s machine flicked left into the barrier. As he climbed out, the race was effectively over.

Steve Hitchins and Joaquin Folch were the bridesmaids in their matching JPS Lotus 91s, but they had to work hard to shake off Richard Eyre (Williams FW0803). American Aaron Hsu (FWO7B-07) and Ralph Moog (Tyrrell 009-7) completed the top six. Next stop is Most, in the Czech Republic, where double FIA Historic sportscar champ Folch — who has yet to win a TGP round — may wheel out the ex-Rosberg 1982 Swiss GP-winning Williams FW08-05 in which Bob Berridge mopped up the 1998 and ’99 titles.
