Button to drive Williams at Goodwood

Britain’s newest Grand Prix star Jenson Button takes his second opportunity of the year to compete in front of his home fans at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed on 23-25 June. The 20-year-old, who became the youngest driver ever to score a World Championship point in March’s Brazilian GP, will drive the BMW Williams FW22 on the 1.16-mile hillclimb course. Opposition includes Johnny Herbert in a Jaguar R1, plus McLaren and Jordan cars.

Emerson Fittipaldi who, at 25, became the youngest World Champion in 1972, returns to the meeting to drive a JPS Lotus 72 for the first time since his triumph. The Brazilian, who also won the 1989 CART Indycar title, made a lot of new fans when he drove Penske Mercedes at the 1997 and ’99 Festivals.

Contrasting with the first of the black and gold Fl Lotuses will be the last, Ayrton Senna’s Renault turbo-powered 98T of 1986. Classic Team Lotus is also bringing one of Mario Andretti’s 1978 World Championship-winning 79s, to be driven by ex-Lotus racer and 1988 Le Mans winner Johnny Dumfries. MP
