Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari?
Speculation that Hamilton is in talks with Ferrari has been played down
Even when he isn’t winning Lewis Hamilton still dominates the headlines. Shortly after the cancelled race at Imola reports surfaced that the seven-time world champion was in talks to join Ferrari.
Hamilton’s current Mercedes contract expires at the end of the season and Ferrari has reportedly offered him a £40m deal to jump ship. Several reports claimed that John Elkann, the Ferrari president, was in personal talks with the 38-year-old. The speculation plays into a growing narrative that Hamilton is frustrated by his current Mercedes woes in an uncompetitive car which means he is as far away as ever from clinching his record-breaking eighth world title.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, played down the speculation and Hamilton denied he had been in contact with Ferrari ahead of the Monaco GP.
For some fans – and journalists – a potential ‘dream team’ of Hamilton and Charles Leclerc remains hard to resist, however. And it would make a decent episode of Drive to Survive. One question still unresolved is whether the tifosi would bestow a nickname. If Nigel Mansell was il leone, could F1 GOAT contender Hamilton one day be il capra?
