BMW Carrot?

Sir,

You concluded a road-test report on the BMW 320 (Jan. ’76) by saying that “BMW Concessionaires. GB, in the past -so heavily criticised for overpricing their range, could almost be accused of charity, pricing the 320 at £3,349”. Very true.

On the basis of comment like this, glowing reports in other magazines, and my satisfied ownership of a BMW, I placed an order with my local BMW distributor.

For some inexplicable reason, however, there was a sudden hiccup in the supply of all 3 Series cars from BMW. In the gap between order and supply, there were some rather alarming price increases which have taken my 320 from an on-the-road price of around £3,500 to £4,500.

I hesitate to suggest that the initial pricing was a carrot to catch donkeys like me . .

As for charity—well, that begins at home, and following my reluctant cancellation of the 320, that is where I shall have to seek my next car.

Thank you as always for the enjoyment which my copy of Motor Sport gives to all my friends who take it to read.
