Berger suffers breaks and burns

Gerhard Berger's horrific accident at the San Marino Grand Prix on April 23 resulted in nothing worse than a broken rib, a cracked shoulder-blade and second-degree bums to his hands, which were given skin-grafts in an Innsbruck hospital the following week.

The Austrian was well enough to attend the Monaco Grand Prix as a television commentator, but was not expected to return to the cockpit until the United States Grand Prix in Phoenix on June 4 at the earliest.

Ferrari has declined to replace him in the complex semi-automatic F1/89 even though it risks heavy fines from FISA for the non-appearance of one of its entries in Mexico City on May 28.
