CAPT. CAMPBELL’S RECORD.
The topic of the moment is Captain Malcolm Campbell’s successful record breaking run at Daytona Beach, whereby he beat Major Segrave’s record by over 3 m.p.h.
Every credit is due to Captain Campbell and to all who had a hand in the manufacture of his special car. At 214 m.p.h.—which was the fastest ” one-way” speed attained—the strain on every part was necessarily tremendous, but far greater was it when, at over 200 m.p.h., the car skidded broadside. One would expect the tyres to blow off or the wheels to buckle ; yet neither happened ; Campbell recovered control and continued. Incidentally, the well-known Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels were used and the manufacturers are naturally very proud of their product. In connection with these wheels we hear that they can now be supplied for immediate fitment to any make of car. It is claimed that they are both stronger and lighter than disc or artillery wheels. Campbell has definitely proved their strength !—and that, owing to their resilience, they effect a saving of 40 per cent. on the tyre bill,
