Missed opportunity

Shortly before we closed for press, the Swedish Rally ended in Karlstad. Colin McRae fully justified his inclusion in Subaru’s World Championship line-up by finishing second, the best British result on foreign soil since the World Championship was conceived in 1973.

It is a long time since British rally drivers had much to shout about; what a shame that the national press restricted the news to results sections, tucked away in small type in the nether regions of their sports pages.

MOTOR SPORT applauds McRae’s achievement. Hopefully his success will pave the way for a future generation of British talent in a sport that hasn’t had a household name in this country since Paddy Hopkirk. S A
